National Brain Injury Awareness Month
March 2008
In the United States, an estimated 1.5 million individuals experience a traumatic brain injury, or TBI, every year. More than 50, 000 of these individuals will die as a result of their brain injury. In March, the Brain Injury Association of America sponsors Brain Injury Awareness Month to create awareness that TBI is a leading cause of death and disability, and to support prevention, advocacy, and research.
A TBI occurs when an external force impacts the head and causes the brain to move within the skull, or causes the skull to fracture and injure the brain.
When the brain is injured, nerve cells and pathways are damaged. These injuries can affect an individual’s ability to think, act, feel, and move. Body functions such as regulating temperature, managing blood pressure, and controlling bowel and bladder functions may also be impaired.

Vericom can help you communicate cost-effectively with your internal and external customers. Here are some examples of how SoundCare can be used to raise awareness about this issue:

  • Create a SoundView with a neurosurgeon
  • Create a SoundView with a family member of an individual with TBI
  • Promote your neurosurgical and rehabilitative services
  • Differentiate your neurosurgical services from the competition

    Sample SoundCare Message

"Traumatic brain injury, or TBI, occurs when an external force impacts the head and results in impaired cognitive, behavioral, or physical functions. After a head injury, the following symptoms may be experienced: watery spinal fluid draining out of the ears or nose, loss of consciousness, dilated or unequal pupil size, vision changes, and dizziness. Any individual with a suspected TBI should call 911, and seek immediate emergency medical attention."

SoundCareŽ messages can be customized in many ways. If you are a Vericom client and would like to see this message written in the context of prevention, treatment, educational events, or from any other perspective, please call Vericom Customer Relations at 800-800-1090.
