National Drunk and Drugged Driving (3D) Prevention Month
December 2008
This holiday season is a perfect opportunity to take personal responsibility for promoting public safety. In recent years, more than 16,000 persons have lost their lives in alcoholrelated motor vehicle accidents. Almost every 31 minutes, a death resulted from drinking alcohol while driving, and over 1.4 million drivers were arrested for driving while impaired by alcohol and drugs. Studies show that three out of every ten persons will be involved in an alcohol related motor vehicle accident.

Typically, the winter holiday season is one of the most dangerous times of the year because of impaired driving. As celebrations abound, more motorists put the public's health and safety at risk by driving under the influence. The tragedy is that impaired driving is an entirely preventable crime.

Here are some ways to use SoundCare to remind your callers to stay safe this holiday season with messages on topics such as these:

  • Designating sober drivers, calling a taxi or friend to take you home, or using public transportation are important ways to protect yourself and others from driving hazards when you are impaired.
  • When impaired drivers are on the road, they put themselves at risk and the public's safety in jeopardy. In addition to the physical and emotional damage inflicted by an impaired driver, there is also a financial burden placed on the community, from court costs, medical and emergency services, public property repair, and more.
