Lung Cancer Awareness Month
November 2008
Today in the U.S., lung cancer kills more people than any other cancer. In fact, lung cancer kills more Americans than breast, prostate, colon, liver, and kidney cancer and melanoma combined. People who have never smoked make up about ten to fifteen percent of newly diagnosed lung cancer cases, while thirty-five to forty percent of new lung cancer cases are current smokers. Former smokers make up fifty percent of new lung cancer cases. Quitting smoking reduces your chances of getting lung cancer, but former smokers are still at increased risk.

In November, Vericom recognizes Lung Cancer Awareness Month as does The Lung Cancer Alliance, a national non-profit organization devoted to increasing awareness of lung cancer issues and advocating for those living with lung cancer. The Lung Cancer Alliance seeks to educate public policy leaders while providing specific patient education and support opportunities.

Vericom clients have the opportunity to educate their calling audiences about the community resources available to lung cancer patients, the dangers of smoking, and resources available to help smokers quit. Custom SoundCare messages can provide callers with information such as:
  • Dates, times and descriptions of smoking cessation classes and programs sponsored by your facility
  • The availability of the Lung Cancer Hotline, a toll-free phone information and referral service for people living with lung cancer
  • Programs and services that are available at your facility for the diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer
  •

    Sample SoundCare Message

"Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths among men and women, but it's also the most preventable cancer. A cough that won't go away, chest pain, shortness of breath or coughing up blood might be symptoms of lung cancer. Not smoking is the best way to prevent lung cancer. Take time to learn more about ways to detect and treat lung cancer during Lung Cancer Awareness Month in November."

"Are you a senior who's still hooked on smoking? You're never too old to lose a bad habit. Both your body and your mind will benefit from being a nonsmoker. Cigarette smokers may have a higher risk of developing dementia and Alzheimer's disease. Isn't it time to quit? If you need help kicking the habit, just ask."

SoundCareŽ messages can be customized in many ways. If you are a Vericom client and would like to see this message written in the context of prevention, treatment, educational events, or from any other perspective, please call Vericom Customer Relations at 800-800-1090.
