National Glaucoma Awareness Month is celebrated in January to support education, screening, and research about glaucoma— a group of diseases which can damage the optic nerve and cause impaired vision or blindness. Prevent Blindness America is a volunteer eye health and safety organization with the mission to "prevent blindness and preserve sight” by sponsoring observances such as National Glaucoma Awareness Month.
Over 2 million Americans age 40 and older have been diagnosed with glaucoma. Initially these persons have no symptoms. As glaucoma progresses however, peripheral and straight – ahead vision is lost. The following persons are at increased risk of developing glaucoma: African Americans over the age of 40, persons over the age of 60, and persons with a family history of glaucoma.
Glaucoma is not treatable after vision has been lost. However, in the early stages, treatment options are available with medication, laser trabeculoplasty, or surgery. Regular dilated eye exams are essential for early recognition and treatment of glaucoma.
