National Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month
May 1-31, 2008
Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer, affecting twenty percent of the American population. Most skin cancers are curable if detected and treated early; however, one individual dies every hour from melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer. This month, the American Academy of Dermatology focuses attention on efforts to educate the public on the prevention of skin cancer and melanoma.

Melanoma can occur anywhere on the body, but is most frequently found on the upper back. Almost seventy-five percent of all skin cancer deaths are caused by melanoma, and there will be over 105,000 new cases diagnosed in the United States this year. Excessive exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet radiation is the greatest risk factor for developing melanoma.

    Sample SoundCare Message

"The American Academy of Dermatology offers the following tips, or the A-B-C-D check, for early detection of melanoma, which is a serious form of skin cancer. Check moles for asymmetry and border irregularity. Observe the mole for uneven pigmentation with colors of tan, brown, white, and blue. Measure the diameter of the mole, which will usually be greater than 6 millimeters, if it is melanoma. If you notice any of these changes in the size, color, shape, or texture of a mole, speak to your dermatologist."

SoundCareŽ messages can be customized in many ways. If you are a Vericom client and would like to see this message written in the context of prevention, treatment, educational events, or from any other perspective, please call Vericom Customer Relations at 800-800-1090.
