Is Your Organization Ready for the Future of Cancer?
New laws, treatments, and practices are having profound effects on the way hospitals, physicians, and managed care companies engage in the business of cancer. As advances in treatment options offer new hope to patients, cancer treatment facilities must find ways to offer access to care while staying in the black. How will your organization fare?

I hope you find this issue of HealthLink insightful.

The Business of Cancer
Oncologists run a business where nobody ever wants to be a customer. Yet the universal experience of cancer has touched virtually everyone in and outside of healthcare with a heart-wrenching experience. But it may not always be so. Much talked-about clinical advances on the horizon will revolutionize the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer. At the same time, those same advances will bring about far-reaching changes in how the hospitals, physician practices and health plans involved in treating cancer will operate in the future.

There will be winners and losers, and they may not be the ones you would expect. For instance, today, medical oncologists are viewed as the relative underdogs. They command a high salary, but Medicare payment trends in the pipeline may substantially damage their business. Conversely, large academic medical centers wield a tremendous amount of power when it comes to the business of cancer. Not only can these institutions afford both the hardware costs and the labor expense of fully embracing new radiation technology, they also are backed by health plans that are steering their most challenging cases to these centers.

Case Study: SoundCare highlights Holy Cross Hospital's high-tech, high-touch cancer care
Faith-based and mission-driven, Holy Cross Hospital is a leader in innovative, quality healthcare and is a member of Trinity Health. Holy Cross Hospital prides itself in balancing high-tech programs with high-touch compassionate care. Oncology is one specialized area where Holy Cross Hospital has experienced sweeping advances in technology while still maintaining their focus on patient care. Via SoundCare, Holy Cross Hospital is able to convey to callers on hold how they provide a unique blend of high-tech and high-touch care to the communities they serve.

Holy Cross Hospital's Cancer Institute is one of the largest community hospital cancer programs in Maryland and one of only six in the state accredited by the American College of Surgeons as a teaching hospital cancer program. "As part of our fully integrated marketing campaign, we utilize SoundCare in our clinical trial recruitment, and it provides a communication vehicle to help us differentiate our cancer center," says Jeri Kirschner, Manager of Marketing and Communications for Holy Cross Hospital. "For example, we are the only hospital in the area offering the I-ELCAP lung screening, and SoundCare helps us get the word out."

Cutting-edge technology in the diagnosis and treatment of women's cancers, prostate cancer, and lung cancer set Holy Cross Hospital apart from other hospitals in the Washington, D.C. area. As a result, people do not have to drive far to receive high quality cancer services. SoundCare lets our community know we have everything for early cancer detection and state-of-the-art treatment right here, right now, says Kirschner. We are a community hospital with a very caring feel. It is important our callers and patients know that when they come to us for treatment, they experience Holy Cross Hospital's high level of expertise and compassionate care.

"Recruiting candidates for clinical trials, supporting marketing programs, communicating facility changes, and conveying important event and program information are just a few of the many ways Holy Cross Hospital benefits from SoundCare." Adds Nancy Graham, Writing Specialist for Holy Cross Hospital, "SoundCare communicates information about us to an already captive audience. Our callers want to know about our services and the type of care we provide, and SoundCare delivers what they want to hear."
